The 4 Timelines of The Southern Gothic Project#

The narrative architecture of the project operates on four distinct, intersecting timelines.

1. Chronos (The Linear History)#

  • Definition: The objective, linear sequence of events as they occurred in the story world (e.g., 1975–2025).

  • Function: Provides the bedrock reality and historical context.

  • Tracking: Standard chronological timeline.

2. Meaning (The Narrative Arc)#

  • Definition: The order in which the reader experiences the events. This is non-linear, driven by emotional logic, revelation, and thematic resonance rather than calendar time.

  • Function: Controls the pacing and the “reveal” of the mystery.

  • Tracking: Longform plugin “Draft” order.

3. The Meta-Timeline (The Builder’s Journey)#

  • Definition: Lisa’s real-time journey of building the vault, the “Homegrown MFA,” and the technical infrastructure.

  • Function: Captures the “Learning in Public” aspect. Documented in the 04_Process_Journal and 00_Inbox.

  • Key Events: Discovery of Quartz, the “Functional Non-Existence” conversation, the decision to use Neo-Brutalism.

4. Hazel’s Novel (The Recursive Layer)#

  • Definition: The timeline of the novel Hazel herself is writing within the story. Hazel is a character with “no arc” who channels her energy into creative output.

  • Origin: Triggered by the gAImode concept of “Functional Non-Existence” (approx. Dec 26-28, 2024).

  • Themes: Contemporary Southern Gothic, “The Metaphorical Hashtag” as a theological device (hiding things from God), the “Evolved Offspring of O’Connor and Faulkner.”

  • Function: Allows for recursive commentary on the genre and the act of creation itself.

Convergence Points#

  • Functional Non-Existence: Bridged the Meta-Timeline (Lisa learning YAML) and Hazel’s Timeline (Hazel finding a theological metaphor).
